Rome, May 13 (LaPresse) – Nearly 100 directors and actors have written an open letter to Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli and undersecretaries Borgonzoni and Mazzi to address the “working and production crisis in Italian cinema,” which, they write, “is undoubtedly in crisis.”
"Over the past two years," the letter states, "a general climate of regulatory uncertainty and delays—mainly due to the government's handling of the Tax Credit reform—has triggered a systemic crisis affecting many productions, especially smaller and independent ones. Hundreds of workers have been left without jobs, income support for 2025, and wage and social security compensation for 2024."
The crisis, the letter continues, threatens to strip the entire sector of creativity, autonomy, and innovation, weakening its ability to compete both culturally and economically on the international stage. While the expected upcoming publication of the final version of the corrective Tax Credit decree is seen as a first step, it is considered "incomplete and insufficient."
“We believe,” the letter concludes, “that far broader and more significant measures are needed, as called for by Pupi Avati during the David di Donatello awards ceremony. Italian culture and democracy must not be bent to serve partial interests—they must be protected and enriched with respect for competence, professionalism, constitutional rules, and everyone’s rights.”
The signatories urge the Ministry to meet as soon as possible with associations representing actors, writers, and technicians, and to listen to the urgent requests they’ve been voicing for months. They also call for an end to baseless controversy and unacceptable attacks on those who have rightfully criticized the Ministry’s actions, such as colleagues Elio Germano and Geppi Cucciari, to whom they extend their full solidarity.
Among the 94 signatories are prominent names in Italian cinema, including Francesco Acquaroli, Gianni Amelio, Paola Cortellesi, Ferzan Ozpetek, Oscar winners Paolo Sorrentino and Gabriele Salvatores, Matteo Garrone, Pierfrancesco Favino, Valerio Mastandrea, Francesca and Cristina Comencini, Nanni Moretti, Marco Bellocchio, Margherita Buy, Luca Zingaretti, and Paolo Virzì.
