Antitrust: Meta suspends conditions that exclude competitors' chatbots from WhatsApp

Milan, 24 December (LaPresse) – The Antitrust Authority has ordered Meta to suspend the conditions that exclude competitors' AI chatbots from WhatsApp. The Italian Competition and Market Authority – according to a statement from the Antitrust Authority – has adopted the precautionary measure against Meta Platforms Inc., Meta Platforms Ireland Limited, WhatsApp Ireland Limited and Facebook Italy (“Meta”). The investigation was launched in July 2025 for alleged abuse of a dominant position in violation of Article 102 TFEU because the company integrated the Meta AI service into the WhatsApp messaging app, giving it a prominent position over competitors' services. The proceedings were objectively expanded on 25 November, with the simultaneous initiation of precautionary sub-proceedings, concerning the application of the new contractual conditions provided for in the WhatsApp Business Solution Terms, introduced on 15 October and which will take full effect by 15 January 2026. These contractual conditions completely exclude Meta AI's competitors in the AI chatbot services market from the WhatsApp platform.
