Rome, April 9 (LaPresse) – "At this time, defense spending maintains its original direction and trajectory. According to our accounting criteria—which may be discussed within NATO—we believe we are aligned with the 2% target," said Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti during a press conference following the Council of Ministers meeting. "The increase in the GDP ratio demanded both by the European Commission and by NATO will require making some decisions. At this moment, we are not taking any such measures, but they will be made within the prescribed timeframe," he added. "There is a substantial request from the European Commission to invoke the national escape clause regarding fiscal indicators by the end of April. Therefore, likely during the parliamentary resolution on the DEF, Parliament will need to express its position. Following that path would inevitably require a deviation from the budgetary balance, which involves a constitutionally reinforced voting procedure in both Chambers and the necessary majority."
