Milan, March 12 (LaPresse/AP) – The United Kingdom will not launch immediate countermeasures in response to the tariffs on steel and aluminum imports imposed by US President Donald Trump. However, the British government continues to negotiate a broader trade agreement with the United States.
This was announced by the UK Secretary of State for Trade, Jonathan Reynolds, who explained that the UK will continue to "engage closely and productively with the United States to defend the UK’s commercial interests."
While he did not rule out future tariffs on US imports, he stated, "We will keep all options on the table and will not hesitate to respond in the national interest," but emphasized that the government remains "focused on a pragmatic approach and is rapidly negotiating a broader economic agreement with the United States to eliminate additional tariffs and benefit UK businesses and our economy."
British Prime Minister, Labour leader Keir Starmer, has worked to build strong ties with Trump, hoping to avoid tariffs imposed on many other US trading partners.
