ECB, Lagarde: "The level of uncertainty is very high: Our commitment to price stability"

Frankfurt (Germany), March 12 (LaPresse) – "The level of uncertainty we are facing is exceptionally high. The trade policy uncertainty index is currently at a value close to 350, which is more than six times its average value since 2021. Geopolitical risk indicators have reached levels not seen since the Cold War, excluding wars and major terrorist attacks." This was stated by European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde during her speech at the conference 'The ECB and its watchers'. "In an environment of uncertainty, a strong commitment to maintaining medium-term price stability is more important than ever," explained Lagarde, adding that "this commitment will require agility in responding to new shocks, albeit within a well-defined framework that limits short-sighted reactions and unrestrained discretion. Consequently, we will need to continue to guide public expectations. People will look to us, and other policymakers, to understand how we will navigate this more volatile era and how we will contribute to reducing, rather than amplifying, uncertainty."
