Brussels, Jan. 27 (LaPresse) – "Following the sale of the majority of the Italian stake in MPS, which resulted in the loss of control over the bank, MPS is no longer bound by its commitment under the State aid decision to refrain from acquisitions. This allows it to undertake corporate actions it deems appropriate to pursue its commercial interests," said a spokesperson for the European Commission when asked about MPS's potential acquisition of Mediobanca.

"From a merger control perspective, MPS’s offer to acquire Mediobanca has not been notified to the Commission," the spokesperson added. "As always, it is up to the parties to assess whether a transaction must be notified to the Commission under EU merger rules. Moreover, regarding the Commission's 2022 State aid decision, the Commission remains in close and constructive contact with the Italian authorities," the spokesperson concluded.
